Thom-Ka® (Thomas-Kali) is a potassium-rich fertilizer often containing some magnesium and sometimes calcareous components. It is mainly used to strengthen plants and improve their winter hardiness.

  • Stronger plants: Potassium strengthens cell walls and improves resistance to diseases, drought, and frost. Plants remain sturdier and less limp.
  • Better flowering and fruiting: More and larger flowers and a higher yield for vegetables and fruits. Better taste and storage quality.
  • Increased winter hardiness: Ideal as an autumn fertilizer. Lawns and perennials will get through winter stronger.
  • Extra magnesium: Promotes chlorophyll and prevents yellowing of leaves. Ensures a deep green color for lawns.
  • Suitable for potassium-demanding crops: Safe for potatoes, fruit trees, brassicas, and lawns.
  • Cheaper than sulfate of potash magnesia and more suitable for larger areas.

Especially suitable for:

  • Lawns (autumn application)
  • Potatoes
  • Fruit trees
  • Brassicas
  • Sandy soil (often potassium deficient)

Good to know

Thomas-Kali usually contains less magnesium than sulfate of potash magnesia and is not always completely chloride-free. For sensitive plants (such as grapes or some fruit varieties) and potatoes (early varieties and baking varieties), sulfate of potash magnesia is often a better choice.

Application and dosage

Autumn (September–November) – most important time

  • For lawns, perennials, and ornamental shrubs
  • Increases resistance to frost and diseases
  • Ensures stronger cell walls

 Spring (March–April)

  • As a supplement for crops with high potassium demand
  • For example, in vegetable gardens or for fruit

Lawns

  • Autumn (September–November): 30–50 g/m²
  • Spring (April–May): 20–30 g/m²
  • Tip: spread evenly and then lightly rake in or water.

Garden and ornamental plants / perennials

  • Per m² or per plant: 20–40 g/m² around the roots
  • Spread in autumn for winter hardiness or in spring as a supplement.

Vegetable garden / crops

  • Potatoes / brassicas / tomatoes (if not sensitive to chlorine): 25–35 g/m²
  • Fruit trees (if not sensitive to chlorine): 50–100 g per young tree, older trees 150–200 g per tree

 Tips

  • Do not spread too much at once → risk of salt damage.
  • Thomas-Kali contains chlorine → do not use on sensitive plants such as potatoes (baking varieties and early varieties), tomatoes, grapes, fruit varieties. In such cases, use sulfate of potash magnesia instead.
  • Can be combined with other fertilizers (N and P) for balanced nutrition.
