Nutritional advice
It is important to adjust the protein supply to the needs of your horse.
The maintenance requirement of an adult horse is approximately 500 grams of protein per day. The requirement of a sport horse performing (very) heavy work is roughly twice as high.
Roughage forms the foundation and should, in principle, provide the majority of your horse's protein needs. Therefore, it's important to know the quality of your roughage. You can have it tested.
A deficiency can be supplemented with:
- Protein-rich roughage such as alfalfa
- Concentrated feed
- Supplement such as HWP protein powder
Points of interest :
Digestion : Horses have a sensitive digestive system that primarily requires fiber, such as grass and hay. Too much wheat protein can upset the horse's gastrointestinal tract and even lead to colic or laminitis.
Allergies : Some horses are sensitive to gluten or grains. If in doubt, consult a veterinarian.
Limited amounts : To prevent horses from over-proteining, wheat protein should always be added in limited amounts and always in combination with other nutritious and fiber-rich sources.
