'Wallonne' frisée endive has fine, incised and strongly curled leaves. This variety is very suitable for use in salads and as a garnish, but also for stews and hotpots.
Wallonne should always be pre-sown and then transplanted. Spring cultivation can lead to premature bolting; this risk is reduced by pre-sowing warmly at approximately 22 °C in a seed tray or pot. Even then, it is advisable not to let the head grow larger than about 350 grams. Seedlings with four true leaves can be transplanted after approximately 6–8 weeks.
After the longest day (June 21), frisée endive can be sown or planted without problems and continue to grow well into autumn. Autumn endive can then easily reach a kilo or more without bolting. In this phase, the planting distance can be wider, for example 30x40 cm. During cultivation, it is advisable to remove discolored leaves under the head and at the same time check for slugs, which like to seek shelter there during the day.
