Winter Carrot 'Flakkée 2' produces large orange carrots and forms a substantial crop. The carrots are wonderfully sweet and can be excellently stored after harvest.
Winter carrots can only be sown in April and May. Sow the seeds directly into the ground, preferably on raised ridges. Ensure the soil is well loosened. The finer the soil, the straighter and longer the carrot can grow. Maintain a row spacing of 20 cm. Sow the seeds in rows, one after another, between your fingers. When the seedlings emerge, thin them to a plant spacing of 20x5 cm. Depending on the desired carrot thickness, a wider or narrower plant spacing can also be maintained. With a wider plant spacing between the carrots, the roots will grow faster and have more space to develop into thicker carrots. A narrower plant spacing results in thinner carrots.
Problems with carrot fly are best solved with insect netting; cover quite soon after emergence. A simple framework/cage works best to deter the carrot fly.
The carrots can be harvested in October and November. Store the roots in a cool place; sand prevents dehydration. Don't be surprised by mice.
