Wheat bran is the skin of the wheat grain that remains after the starch has been largely removed from the grain. Wheat bran is almost always fed wet, because otherwise it is easily blown away. This can be done with warm or cold water.
- Rich in minerals and B vitamins.
- Low starch content
- High fibre content, which positively stimulates the intestinal movements of horses.
- Bran contains a lot of phosphorus and few vitamins.
- Bran is often used to make a slobber. Slobber can also be mixed with psyllium seeds (flea seeds) or psyllium chunks to carry sand from the intestines to the outside. This significantly reduces the chance of sand colic.
Ingredients and Analysis
Ingredients
Bran has a calcium/phosphorus ratio of 1:8, so it can help to even out the calcium/phosphorus ratio when feeding calcium-rich products such as alfalfa and beet pulp.
Please note that an unbalanced calcium/phosphorus ratio can cause problems with the growth and repair of bones, tendons and muscles.
Nutritional advice
Wheat bran can have a laxative effect in large quantities, so do not feed more than 1kg per day.
wet feeding can be done with warm or cold water
nb. Do not administer to horses with thin manure.
